The Gangchen Samling School (GSS) is an English medium co-educational institution aimed at providing quality education to poor and needy children.
Before the Gangchen Samling School came into existence, it was known as Samling Montessori School and was run directly under the aegis of Samling Carpet Industries (P) Ltd. The Managing Director of Samling Carpet Industries (P). Ltd. Mr. Tsetan Gyurman Shrestha established Samling Montessori School in the year 1989 with a vision to educate the children of the workers in his factory and introduced the Montessori system of education as a majority of the workers could not afford a decent education for their children.
Samling Montessori School was elementary and hence our children had to go to other schools to continue with their education. It was when our children went to other schools that we received very positive feedback about our standard of education. Our Chairman was encouraged by this response and then thought about expanding the Samling Montessori School and also spoke to Ms. Sharon Dawson of Help in Action. Help in Action is a voluntary non-profit association founded by His Eminence Lama Gangchen Rinpoche, whose organisation supports the education of hundreds of children in and around the Kathmandu valley. The Association is part of the Lama Gangchen World Peace Foundation, a United Nations affiliated Non Governmental Organisation. Help in Action also sponsors the education of the majority of the children at Gangchen Samling School without whose help the school would not have been what it is now and we are very indebted to His Eminence Lama Gangchen Rinpoche and Help in Action for the continuous support and look forward to the same in the years to come.
The Managing Director of Samling Carpet Industries (P)Ltd. And Chairman of Gangchen Samling School Mr. Tsetan Gyurmari Shrestha also spoke to his friend Mr. Gajendra Kumar Lama, former Vice-Chairman of Lumbini Development Trust and a renowned social worker and intellectual.
They spoke to a number of renowned academicians like Prof. Dr. Tulasi Ram Vaidya, Prof. Dr. Prem Kumar Khatry, Mr. Dev Raj Gurung and others for their expertise and advice. With sound advice from these renowned figures, Gangchen Samling School was formally established in the year 2003 with funding from Samling Carpet Industries (P) Ltd.
The Gangchen Samling School is grateful to Mr. James Francis Tufenkian of Tufenkian Artisan Carpets, New York for his magnanimous and voluntary contribution towards the construction of the new school building. Mr. Tufenkian is the person who created a market for Nepalese Tibetan Carpet in the U.S.A and also a friend and partner of our Chairman Mr. Shrestha. Mr. Tufenkian also supports the education of 52 needy children including a number of orphans in the school has pledged to continue to do so in the future.
The Gangchen Samling School is also very indebted to Mr. Mike Alexander Ganzert of Maklau Design GMBH of Germany for supporting the education of twelve needy children.
